Empowering Women Through Legal Literacy: Creating a Culture of Inclusion and Respect
Empowering women through legal literacy.
Discover how Harshingar is transforming lives by imparting legal knowledge and empowering women to stand strong and reject victimhood.
Harshingar is a project that was initiated by Flowering Tree in collaboration with MARG in 2007. It aims to develop the capabilities of women through legal literacy and empower them to reject victimhood and acquire agency as active citizens in a democracy. The project facilitates the inner development of women based on cultural pedagogy, while outer development takes place through understanding the workings of law and governance.
Harshingar works towards including women in civil society processes in both rural and urban India. By educating women about their constitutional rights and existing legal provisions, the project helps women understand the relationship between the law and everyday life, making them active agents in civil society. It takes an integrative approach by strengthening the bonds of understanding through action with men as partners in both family life and the community at large.
The Harshingar project has spread its reach to urban Delhi and rural Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh, empowering more than 1,50,000 individuals. Today, more than 1200 women paralegals, known as Harshingar Active Women Cadres (HAWCS), passionately drive change in their communities. Women learn how to find solutions through legal channels by identifying issues, discussing the legal framework, meeting with relevant authorities, and reviewing and evaluating efforts to help communities become self-governing. Through Harshingar, women have steadily grown acquainted with the law, legal processes, and their rights.
